Tuckahoe, NY – It’s never too late to get the smile of your dreams. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age, so if you’ve never had orthodontic treatment or your smile has shifted, you can still get that smile you’ve always wanted.
Can my teeth still be moved as an adult?
Aren’t most orthodontic patients children? You probably most commonly picture an adolescent when you conjure up an image of someone in braces. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age though, and for many adults, their treatment can be just as efficient and effective as for younger patients. The process to move your teeth is the same no matter your age. However, adults don’t have the advantage of a still-growing jaw as younger patients do, so treatment can take longer for adults.
How is orthodontic treatment different for adults?
A few things make orthodontic treatment in your adult years slightly different from adolescence.
- The first is an adult’s jaw has stopped growing, meaning we can’t guide jaw growth as we can with our younger patients. Teeth in adults still respond to orthodontic treatment, but they may not move as quickly as teeth in adolescents. But we can still help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted; it may take an additional step or two.
- Additionally, adults are more likely to have underlying dental issues that may need to be addressed before starting treatment. If you have experienced any bone loss or currently have periodontal issues, you may need to have these issues corrected before orthodontic treatment can begin.
- For our adult patients, we often work with other specialists to help achieve our patient’s smile dreams. This may mean working with a surgeon, periodontist, or your dentist to ensure you receive the best care possible.
Why should I correct it now?
There are many reasons to visit an orthodontist to see how your smile can be transformed, and they go much further than just cosmetic reasons. You could have underlying dental issues that you don’t even realize are associated with a bad bite. Straighter smiles aren’t just prettier, they are healthier, too. A bad bite and misaligned teeth are harder to keep clean. This can make you more susceptible to decay and gum disease, in addition to being more susceptible to experiencing excessive tooth wear or chipping of teeth.
Is orthodontic treatment affordable?
At Tuckahoe Family Orthodontics we work hard to ensure every patient can receive the treatment that they need. The exact cost of your treatment is dependent on several issues, but all costs will be discussed at your initial consultation. Our financial coordinators will work with you to find a payment plan that can fit into your budget and ensure that if you have dental insurance, you can receive all the benefits you are due. We accept most major insurance plans, which can oftentimes significantly lower your out-of-pocket costs.
What are my options for a discrete orthodontic treatment?
We know many patients, especially adults, don’t love the idea of having a mouth full of metal while their smiles are being corrected. Luckily, there are more orthodontic treatment options available today than ever before, including some of the most discrete. We offer clear braces and Invisalign clear aligners for those who would like a less noticeable treatment option.
How long will I wear braces?
The average adult patient is in treatment for between 18-30 months. However, the exact length of time you’ll be in treatment will be determined by your orthodontist, based on your specific needs. Every smile is different and responds to treatment differently.
