Exploring the Invisalign Expander

Exploring the Invisalign Expander

Tuckahoe, NY – Innovation is constant in the world of orthodontics. At Tuckahoe Family Orthodontics, we’re always on the lookout for new technologies that can improve our patients’ smile journeys. So we are excited to explore the ways Invisalign’s new Palatal Expander system may be able to help our patients.

For many of our younger patients, palatal expansion is an important component of their treatment. During the process, we gently widen the upper jaw to create space for a growing smile and to correct crossbites. This ensures a healthy foundation for incoming permanent teeth and adequate space for a properly functioning bite.

The Invisalign Expander system promises patients:

  • Aesthetics and comfort. The Invisalign Expander system is a series of smooth, 3D-printed removable devices, unlike a traditional metal expander that is fixed to the roof of the mouth. Patients don’t have more metal added to their smiles, and no visible hardware.
  • Ease of use. Because the Invisalign Expander consists of a series of devices, there is no daily key turn as there is with the traditional expander.
  • Improved hygiene. The Invisalign Expander system is removable, so it can be taken out to brush and floss, making it easy to stay on top of your oral hygiene.

“I love seeing technology advance and am excited about where the future of orthodontics can take us,” says Dr. Polan. “At Tuckahoe Family Orthodontics, we work hard to ensure that every patient receives the individualized care that they need. So, while the Invisalign Palatal Expander is a promising new technology, it may not be ideal for every patient.”

The traditional palatal expander is still the gold star in palatal expansion for several reasons:

  • It’s fixed. Traditional palatal expanders are cemented onto the back teeth, so they are always in and at work. Because many of our palatal expander patients are younger, they may struggle with the compliance necessary for the Invisalign Expander.
  • It’s predictable. The traditional expander is a proven entity on even the toughest cases. Its power and stability provide robust and predictable results for our patients.
  • It’s proven. Decades of research and successful outcomes prove the long-term reliability and effectiveness of traditional expanders.

While advances in the orthodontic world are exciting and we believe the Invisalign Expander is a promising new option, we still believe that for most patients who require significant expansion, the traditional expander is still the best and most reliable option.

At Tuckahoe Family Orthodontics, our job is to ensure that every patient receives the care they need, and that means care completely personalized to their smile. So, whether that means a traditional expander or the new Invisalign Expander, our goal is always to provide the highest level of personalized care.
