Isn’t seven very young for orthodontic treatment?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic consultation happen around a child’s seventh birthday. This is an ideal time because the baby teeth have typically begun to fall out, and the orthodontist can see how the permanent teeth are erupting. It also allows Dr. Polan to see how the jaw is growing.
Seven is the ideal age to begin a relationship with an orthodontist. While most patients won’t require treatment so early, it allows Dr. Polan to start monitoring the smile so that treatment can begin when it will have the most impact. Dr. Polan can create a treatment plan that will address any issues and efficiently and effectively as possible.
Are there signs I can look for to indicate my child may need orthodontic treatment?
There are some things a parent can look for that could be a sign that your child is a candidate of orthodontic treatment:
- Missing or extra teeth
- Teeth that are erupting in the wrong direction or location
- Impacted teeth
- Severe crowding issues
- Irregularity in jaw growth
- Tongue thrust
- Thumb sucking
- Pacifier use
- Mouth breathing
- Tooth grinding
- Front teeth that protrude
What if orthodontic treatment is recommended for my child?
Dr. Polan treats patients of all ages. Treatment for his youngest patients is typically done in two phases. The first phase involves helping guide the growth of the jaw and or teeth first to prevent growth deviation and trauma to specific teeth. Once all permanent teeth have erupted, a second phase of treatment to straighten the smile and improve occlusion will happen in the teenage years. This two phase orthodontic treatment allows Dr. Polan to create a harmonious bite and straighter smile in the most efficient and effective way possible.
What orthodontic treatment options are available for children?
Today there are more treatment options than ever before available. Dr. Polan will recommend the one that will best meet your child’s needs. Options include:
Metal Braces
Metal braces are still the most commonly used treatment option because they are effective and efficient. Today’s metal braces are more low-profile and comfortable.
Clear Braces
Clear braces consist of brackets and wires like metal braces, but are designed to blend in better with the natural smile.
Invisalign Clear Aligners
Invisalign consists of a series of clear, comfortable, and removable aligners that fit comfortably over your child’s teeth. Each set is calibrated to achieve a certain tooth movement over the course of treatment.
